Why Abhaya exists
Does any of this sound familiar?
Not statistics. Not news headlines. Just real moments that happen to real women every day — and have no good solution yet.
The "stay quiet" moment at work
Something happened — a comment, a touch, a message. You didn't know if it "counted." You didn't know who to tell. You stayed quiet because the alternative felt worse.
Changing your route because of a feeling
Not a news story, not a police report — just your gut. You've made decisions about where to walk, how to dress, what time to leave, all because of a feeling you've learned not to ignore.
"Will the police even help?"
You or someone you know needed to file a complaint. You hesitated — not because nothing happened, but because you weren't sure they'd register it. Or if they'd make it worse.
Keeping evidence with nowhere to put it
Screenshots. A voice note. A photo. You kept them because something felt wrong — but nowhere safe to store them, and no idea if they'd ever matter in court.
No one you could tell
Not your family. Not your friends. Because telling them would mean explaining, justifying, managing their reaction. Some things are too heavy to carry alone and too complicated to share.
If even one of these hit close to home
That's exactly why we're building Abhaya.

A real example
What Abhaya looks like when you actually need it
Not a demo. A real situation — and exactly what the app does, step by step.
Something happens at 11pm
You open Abhaya. No login screen. No loading spinner. The emergency guide opens immediately — because we know you might be shaking. First thing it says: "Go somewhere safe first. Then come back to this."
It tells you exactly what to do right now
Don't shower. Don't change clothes. Go to any hospital — you don't need a police complaint first, the doctor must examine you by law. The app shows the nearest hospital and gives you the exact words to say when you get there.
You save everything before it disappears
The vault opens. You import his WhatsApp messages, a photo, your location. Each file gets legally timestamped and encrypted. The app reminds you: "CCTV footage of this area deletes in 48 hours — do you want to request it now?" One tap generates the request letter.
The police refuse to file your FIR
The app says: "This is illegal. Here's exactly what to do." It generates a complaint to your district Superintendent of Police. It links to your state's e-FIR portal. It explains a Section 156(3) magistrate petition. Suddenly you know more than they're counting on you not knowing.
The case drags for months. You don't lose track.
The case tracker pulls your hearing dates from eCourts automatically. Before each date, it explains what to expect in plain language. It connects you to a free legal aid lawyer in your district. When you feel like giving up — and everyone does — the app is still there, still tracking.
In your pocket
Everything you need, always with you.
Built mobile-first. Works offline. Available in 6 Indian languages. Designed for the moment you need it — not the ideal conditions you wish you had.
You do not need a police complaint first. Any govt hospital must examine you.
Privacy & security
What we promise to never do
For an app handling evidence of violence, trust isn't a feature — it's the foundation. Here's ours, in plain language.
Your vault key lives on your device. Only.
The evidence vault uses end-to-end encryption. The encryption key is derived from your device — not stored on our servers, not in our database, not accessible to us under any circumstances. Even if someone broke into our servers, your vault is unreadable.
Zero ads. Zero data selling. Ever.
Abhaya is not built on an advertising model. We will never sell your data, share your usage patterns, or allow your information to be used for targeting. The business model is B2B POSH compliance, not selling attention or data. Your information has no commercial value inside Abhaya.
Genuinely anonymous where it matters.
The safety map, community support, and survey features work with zero identifying information. No name, no email, no account required. On the evidence vault, anonymity is enforced at the encryption layer — even a court order served to us cannot decrypt your files without your key.
We will never share your data with police.
This is non-negotiable. We have no law enforcement partnerships. No data-sharing agreements. If a legal order compels us to produce data, the encrypted blob we store is all we can provide — and it's useless without your key. The app exists to help you navigate the system, not feed data into it.
Built with open, auditable technologies
Who's building this
A developer who got angry enough to build something.
India has 20+ women's safety apps. They all make the same mistake: they assume the police respond, the system works, and information is already accessible. They're wrong on all three.
Abhaya started with a simple question: if the system routinely fails women, what does a tool look like that routes around the system? Not one that trusts police to respond, but one that helps women navigate, document, escalate, and survive — with or without institutional support.
This isn't a startup looking for a market. It's a tool that should exist, being built by someone with the skills to build it. The evidence vault, the legal AI, the FIR escalator — these are answers to specific failure points in the Indian justice pipeline. Each feature exists because something in the system doesn't.
Independent developer
No VC funding. No corporate agenda. Just code and conviction.
Built from Bengaluru
Understanding the ground reality of safety in Indian cities.
Open to audit
The security architecture will be publicly documented and verifiable.
Build tools that create paper trails, preserve evidence, and route around gatekeepers. Don't build tools that assume the system works.
